Family Coaching
What is Family Coaching?
Family coaching is a process in which a family works alongside a family coach to heal and better their relationships. Similar to family therapy, coaching takes place in sessions between family members and their coach. However, family coaching is different from family therapy in some ways. While therapy focuses on discovering and healing the sources of trauma in your past, coaches provide you with real-time support to implement new skills with your family. Their goal is to identify the issues in the family dynamic and put plans in place to resolve those issues so that, in the future, the family can be healthier and happier.
Family coaching can be used to heal the effects of many issues and promote lasting, positive change. It can help family members find meaningful connections by cultivating mutual understanding and empathy. Boundaries are encouraged in family coaching sessions, which ensures everyone feels safe and respected. Effective communication is a crucial piece of family coaching, as it helps to reduce conflicts. This means that individuals can express their needs and concerns confidently both during and outside of coaching sessions.
Family coaching also identifies and addresses familial trauma patterns, providing tailored strategies to heal and break negative cycles. This unique approach ensures that each family’s specific dynamics and challenges are addressed.
Through coaching sessions, your family can learn to:
- Address individual and generational mental health issues
- Empathize with and understand each other
- Communicate effectively and respectfully
- Develop and enforce healthy boundaries
- Utilize coping mechanisms and problem-solving techniques
- Identify and address dysfunction within the unit
- Support each other through difficult times
- Be resilient in the face of adversity
What Are the Benefits of Family Coaching?
Family coaching offers many benefits to individuals and the family unit as a whole. Coaching sessions provide a dedicated, safe space for you and your loved ones to open up and express themselves freely. The non-judgemental environment encourages honesty and empathy. Individuals can find understanding from loved ones on a new level. When each person feels heard and supported, the family unit can draw together and address their issues as a team.
Of course, coaching sessions can also include emotionally charged, difficult conversations. This is normal and often healthy. Discomfort is an opportunity to grow and change. Another benefit of family coaching is that your trained coach will always be there to guide and mediate the conversation. This means that no one will feel alienated or berated. You may experience emotions like anger, sadness, and frustration during sessions, but you will be encouraged to express these feelings in productive and respectful ways.
The CRAFT Approach
Community Reinforcement and Family Training, or CRAFT, is an approach to family coaching that we utilize at Sisu Healing Partners. This coaching method teaches techniques for communication with your loved one with addiction. CRAFT’s goal is to increase positive communication between family members while encouraging healthy behaviors in your loved one with substance use issues.
The techniques taught in CRAFT can be used to facilitate entry into treatment or reduce substance use. However, it is also helpful to family members whose loved ones are currently in treatment or have already completed treatment. CRAFT techniques are great for offering support and encouragement to those on their recovery journey, especially when obstacles and setbacks occur. Moments of crisis and relapses can be difficult to deal with, but CRAFT teaches you how to address these situations with empathy and a future-focused mindset.
As a part of the family healing system, your health and well-being are vital to the health of the system. The family cannot thrive if its members are not taken care of. Practicing self-care and boundary-setting are crucial in protecting your mental health and that of your loved ones. Self-care practices teach self-love and compassion while lowering stress levels. CRAFT could be helpful for family members who may struggle with boundary issues.
CRAFT can also be an empowering experience. It encourages active participation in the family unit and collaboration between family members. Together, you’ll learn how to make decisions, set goals, and solve problems. Having these skills can help you feel confident and capable as an individual and as a team.
